How to Become the Person You Want to Be

There comes a time in life when an event or a person inspires you to make a change to become a better person. That person for me was famed basketball player Kobe Bryant after hearing about his untimely death in January 2020.

I am not into basketball and so, I was completely unaware about how much Bryant had accomplished throughout his career, which made me take a hard look at my own life and ask “what have I done?”.

Hence, I was inspired to write this post and make a video about how to become the person you want to be.

While we all want to do and be better, sometimes it’s not always so easy to change who we are.

Still, I think people should at least give it their best effort to try to become the person they had always envisioned by incorporating the following 10 tips.

How to Become the Person You Want to Be

1. Decide on The Type of Person You Want to Be

The first step to becoming the person you want to be is to decide what type of person you want to be.

Do you want to be a doctor?

Triathlete?

CEO of a fortune 500 company?

Mom?

Singer?

World traveler?

Next, what kind of a person you want to be? Someone who is…

Loving?

Reliable?

Trustworthy?

Giving?

Loyal?

Too often we allow family, friends, or society tell us who we should be or who we are.

Unfortunately, I did that and wasted countless years chasing different professions I was not interested in just to please my father so I could say I had a “prestigious career” when I did not get into law school.

Don’t make the mistake I did!

Only you know yourself and know what makes you happy. Therefore, don’t be afraid to say what you want to do with your life and be bold enough to become the person you were meant to be.

2. Change Your Mindset

If you wish to become the person you want to be, you have to change your mindset and say that you already ARE that person.

So, if you want to be a singer, start telling yourself you are a singer.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, start telling yourself you are an entrepreneur.

You may not be the person you want to be yet, but by focusing your consciousness on the ideal person you wish to become, you will begin to act and behave like that person.

Which leads to…

3. Start Acting the Part

Act like the person you want to become TODAY by asking yourself some pertinent questions. For example, if you wish to be a triathlete, what does a triathlete do in a typical day?

Does a triathlete wake up at 4AM or 5AM in the morning?

Does a triathlete eat a clean, high protein diet at every meal?

Does a triathlete train with a trainer 2 hours a day at the gym?

Think about the type of person you want to become and ask questions like how does he/she act, what’s their behavior, and what do they do during a typical day?

Then start doing those things. Even if it’s something small.

The only difference of who you are now and who you want to become tomorrow are the actions you take today.

4. Keep the Goal in Front of You

Whatever type of person you wish to become or the objective you wish to achieve, be sure to keep the goal right in front of you.

Literally.

Hence, if you want to be a real estate investor, take pictures of types of properties you would like to own and place it on your phone, laptop, refrigerator, mirror, or even on a vision board.

Make sure you are constantly seeing images or reminders of the type of person you want to become. Doing so can really help keep your conscious mind and subconscious mind focused.

5. Get Toxic People and Surroundings Out of Your Life

It’s really important that you protect your mind.

Therefore, if you are surrounded by toxic people or a toxic environment, you need to do everything you can to get that negativity out of your life.

Take a situation I was in.

I want to be a millionaire and I am NOT ashamed to admit it.

However, the last job I had as a Lifeline Sales Agent before I quit to drive for Uber Eats full time, I was surrounded by homeless and low income people all day long and was hearing constant stories about poverty, lack, and financial hardships.

Now…please don’t take this the wrong way.

I am not knocking people for their misfortunes because at the time of this writing, I’m technically a low income earner myself…which is only a temporary situation.

My intention is to become a millionaire and subsequently, I need to surround myself around prosperity where I can’t afford to be associated with people who talk and think about lack all the time.

That said, my last job was really screwing with my head and ultimately, I had to quit. I’m glad I did because I just did not like the environment I was surrounded in for 40+ hours a week.

Just so you know, I do care about the homeless and I donate every week to my favorite charity dedicated to helping the homeless at the Los Angeles Mission.org.

6. Take Action Everyday

It’s great to tell yourself that you are the person you want to be. It’s also great to think in your head that you are the person you want to be.

However, without doing some form of action every day to become the person you want to be, it’s never going to happen.

It you wish to be a world traveler, I don’t expect you to quit your job tomorrow, sell all your stuff, and book a one way ticket to the Amazons.

However, you can do something small like get a passport, research a few affordable countries that you would like to visit, or price out what your expenses might be for your first adventure.

7. Don’t be Afraid to Take Risks

Taking risks is a huge difference between people who succeed in life and people who just let life pass them by. You have to step out of your comfort zone and take risks.

I know I myself have a big problem with this one, but I know getting the things I want in life isn’t always going to be easy.

That said, if you wish to be a singer, don’t be afraid to send your demo tapes to recording studios, upload your songs on your YouTube channel, or perform at local bars.

If needed, have a friend, sibling, or significant other come along with you or be by your side to help give you the confidence you need.

You can reap some great rewards if you are brave enough to take risks. In the end, it will be worth it!

8. Be Willing to do What the Next Person is Not Willing to Do

Let’s take a look at weight loss, for example.

There are plenty of people who want to lose weight, but many are not willing to do what the other person did to lose weight in order to slim down.

Things like stop eating after a certain time, buying healthier food, working out 5 days per week, hiring a personal trainer, or counting calories of everything you put in your mouth.

For the most part, doing just few of these positive habits can really help any person shed some extra pounds.

However, are most people willing to do it?

If you wish to become the person you want to be, simply be willing to do what someone else is not willing to do to help achieve your goal or dream faster.

9. Embrace Perseverance

There is no straight line or ladder to success. You will have some failures and setbacks as you try to become the person you want to be or try to achieve a certain goal.

The thing is, the difference between a person who succeeds and a person who fails is that the person who succeeded kept pushing on when things got tough.

Consequently, don’t give up when you hit your first roadblock.

Learn to embrace perseverance as you embark on your journey because you are going to need it when things don’t according to plan.

Just keep on pushing on until you succeed!

10. Believe in yourself

You can’t expect for anyone to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself first. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true.

Therefore, if you wish to become the person you want to be, you have to be confident that you actually can become that person.

You may have a support group of family and friends to help keep you motivated, but if you don’t, there will be times when you will have to be your own cheerleader and shut down the negative self-talk.

So, start convincing yourself and believe that you can become and do anything you want.

Hopefully, some of the above tips can help you to take some inspired action. That said, if you liked this blog post “How to Become the Person You Want to Be,” be sure to watch the video below, and consider sharing and subscribing to my website or YouTube channel!
